Frequently Asked questions (FAQ)

What is an Echocardiogram?

An echocardiogram is an ultrasound scan of the heart, it demonstrates the structure and function of the heart. It is a relatively painless, risk free, non-invasive procedure. Lubricating jelly is placed on a probe on the chest so the ultrasound waves can penetrate the air/skin. It does require you to undress to the waist. Female patients will be given a gown. Sticky pads will be placed on your chest. Please allow 45min for the procedure. A blood pressure reading will also be taken.

You will need to turn on your side – you are welcome to bring a friend/relative or carer to assist you. If you have limited mobility we can scan you in a wheelchair. We have a no lifting policy within the community.

Do I need to make any special preparations?

Please eat, drink and take all prescribed medication as normal. Please bring any relevant information with you, for example consultant name and any appointment dates.

I am struggling with transport what should I do?

If you are experiencing difficulty arranging transport for your appointment please contact CornwallVolunteers https://www.volunteercornwall.org.uk/transport 01872 265300 or your GP – we are unable to assist with transport arrangements.

Can I change the location of my appointment?

We have clinics across Cornwall from Penzance to Bude but unfortunately due to lack of clinical space available we cannot be everywhere. We do not currently have a clinic base in Truro. You will have been offered the closest available clinic location to you. If you wish to change the location of your appointment this will result in a delay in your appointment.

I need my appointment earlier what can I do?

If this is due to a clinical reason (increasing symptoms or an upcoming operation) please contact your GP. If this is for any other reason please contact us on 07590234865 and leave a message requesting to be placed on the cancellation list. Cancellations happen all the time and we are often looking for patients who are able to attend at short notice.

How do I get my results?

Your results will be reviewed by a consultant cardiologist and then sent to your GP/referring clinician with an advice letter within 10 working days.

How do I change the date/time of my appointment?

Please note that we are generally booked up 4-6 weeks in advance therefore any request to change your appointment will result in a delay. If you cancel or miss your appointment more than twice we will be unable to offer you a further appointment.
